Construction, sports, driving, and air travel all offer the possibility of accidental death even though the highest levels of precautions are taken. These activities continue to take place, and continue to occasionally take human lives, because we have all decided, as a society, that the advantages outweigh the unintended loss.

We have also decided that the advantages of having dangerous murderers removed from our society outweigh the losses of the offender. The second argument against capital punishment is that it is unfair in its administration. Statistics show that the poor and minorities are more likely to receive the death penalty.

Once again, this is a separate issue. However, this is yet another problem of our current court system. The racial and economic bias is not a valid argument against the death penalty. It is an argument against the courts and their unfair system of sentencing.

The third argument is actually a rebuttal to a claim made by some supporters of the death penalty. The claim is that the threat of capital punishment reduces violent crimes. The fourth argument is that the length of stay on death row, with its endless appeals, delays, technicalities, and retrials, keep a person waiting for death for years on end.

It is both cruel and costly. This is the least credible argument against capital punishment. The main cause of such inefficiencies is the appeals process, which allows capital cases to bounce back and forth between state and federal courts for years on end.

If supporting a death row inmate for the rest their life costs less than putting them to death, and ending their financial burden on society, then the problem lies in the court system, not in the death penalty. As for the additional argument, that making a prisoner wait for years to be executed is cruel, then would not waiting for death in prison for the rest of your life be just as cruel, as in the case of life imprisonment without parole. The main reason why death penalty was instituted was to deter crime but available evidence speaks against this.

There are other ways that crime can be deterred. Mark and Hurwitz note that controlling drugs use and, reducing the number of guns in the hands of civilians, are two ways that can effectively control crime. According to these authors, Death penalty comes last in the list of possible ways of deterring crime.

Long life sentence, as a matter of fact, is a better method of controlling and deterring crime compared to death penalty. Death penalty is usually applied arbitrarily and is most of the times irrevocable.

This means that application of death pealty denies the due process of law Bedau 4. Victims once convicted are denied the right to benefit from new evidence that may come up after conviction. Life in parole sentences are advocated for by many who are against death penalty as victims may have a chance of being acquitted once new evidence comes up. In the United States and other heterogeneous societies, the public and civil societies always feel that death penalty is violates the constitutional right of equality and protection.

Available statistical data from different states in the United States prove that death sentence is never applied fairly. There are more blacks who have been executed compared to other races Frederick This does not necessarily mean that blacks are involved more in crime compared to their white or colored counterparts.

Instead of people arguing every now and then that Race is not the only factor that determines whether a suspect criminal ends being convicted to die or not.

Other factors like education status and social status have been quoted as other basis used to disproportionately apply death penalty Those who advocate for death penalty argue that death penalty has far reaching economic benefits compared to other forms of sentencing like life without parole.

They argue that maintaining a life sentence criminal costs nations lots of resources compared to death penalty. This, nevertheless, is not necessary true. Capital punishment squanders and energy of the whole justice system.

Prolonged court session before one can be convicted waste resources that could otherwise be used to compensate families of victims. As it has already been noted, some suspects get executed on the basis of social status.

These are adopted by society to establish behavior standards. Death penalty is the most discussed punishment, which does not leave many people indifferent.

There are many moral arguments against the death penalty, which should make us think twice about our reasons for supporting it.

The first reason against the death penalty is ethical and moral principles. Each of us has the right to live and we have no right to deprive people of this. According to the Bible, the authority to punish, which presumably includes the death penalty, comes from God.

Moreover, the death of a murderer cannot bring peace to the victim, the death of a murderer cannot reverse the crime, and the death of a single murderer will never ensure that the act of murder never takes place again.

Justice is never advanced in the taking of a human life. Morality is never upheld by a legalized murder. The second reason is the execution of innocent people. According to the statistics, twenty-three people who we now know to be innocent have been murdered by the state since Three hundred and fifty people have been found not guilty while in death row awaiting execution.

One of the most famous cases of the murder of an innocent man was execution of Timothy Evans in He was tried and executed for the murder of his baby daughter Geraldine.
